The Liberals and Nationals have increased pressure on family budgets
The Liberals and Nationals have increased pressures on family budgets:
- In 2016, the Liberals and Nationals abolished the Family Fare Deal; and
- In 2018, average Opal fares rose by 10 per cent.
The Family Fare Deal allowed parents or grandparents travelling with children on public transport to only pay for one child’s ticket.
By abolishing the Family Fare Deal, the Liberals and Nationals have required every child to pay fares using a Child/Youth Opal Card.
Currently, children are only eligible for free public transport if they qualify for the School Student Transport Scheme (SSTS). The SSTS allows children to travel on public transport if:
They are travelling to or from school; and
Their school is greater than a certain distance from their home.
The current minimum distances which allow children to qualify for the SSTS are:
1.6km by a straight line, or 2.3km walking, for children in Years 3-6; and
2km by a straight line, or 2.9km walking, for children in Years 7-12.
Labor believes these restrictions are arbitrary and unfair.
Labor will make public transport free for kids
Michael Daley and Labor will allow children to travel on public transport for free.
Labor will allow children to travel for free on Sydney Trains, NSW Trains, buses, light rail and ferries throughout the Opal network.
Labor’s free fares will be available to children until they turn 16 or graduate from a NSW secondary school.
Labor’s plan will allow children to use public transport to travel for free at any time, including:
- To and from school;
- On weekends; and
- During school holidays.
