A Daley Labor Government will restore and support paediatric cardiac services at the Sydney Children’s Hospital (SCH) in Randwick.
This comes after the services were downgraded by the Liberal-National Government.
Senior staff at the Sydney’s Children Hospital have raised the issue of paediatric cardiac services and on-site cardiac surgery with the Berejiklian Government, but they have been ignored.
Labor’s policy was announced by NSW Labor Leader Michael Daley, Shadow Health Minister Walt Secord and Labor’s candidate for Coogee Marjorie O’Neill.
A Daley Labor Government will allocate funding for:
- Three additional cardiologists based fulltime at Sydney Children’s Hospital Randwick;
- The role of an independent Cardiac Director at SCH; and
- An additional Cardio-Thoracic Surgeon based at SCH.
Mr Daley said he wanted to ensure that the State’s two main paediatric hospitals had world class services.
“This is about protecting the most vulnerable in the community and listening to the needs of doctors and the medical professionals,” he said.
Labor candidate for Coogee, Marjorie O’Neill, welcomed the announcement, saying “this is about ensuring babies get the best start in life”.
NSW Shadow Health Minister Walt Secord said: “The Liberals and Nationals have the wrong priorities. They prefer to splurge billions on stadiums rather than invest in health services for vulnerable members of the community, babies.”
